Examining low mass galaxy evolution through SDSS-IV MaNGA spatially resolved spectroscopy
27 April 2018

Despite being the dominant galaxy population by number in the nearby Universe, the formation timescale and mechanism of lower mass galaxies, including dwarf elliptical galaxies, remains unknown. Are quenched dwarfs the remnants of hierarchical galaxy assembly, or are they formed at later times via the morphological transformation of more massive galaxies?

Listening to Einstein’s Universe
9 March 2018

In this talk I will explore the science behind the detection of gravitational waves, awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics to Rai Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish, and describe the important role played by Glasgow researchers in this ground-breaking discovery.

Magnetic reconnection: recent progress from Magnetospheric Multiscale satellite observations
2 March 2018

Magnetic reconnection is a process of fundamental importance to plasma physics in both space and the laboratory. It is also increasingly cited as a process at work in astrophysical systems. This for two reasons: it controls plasma connectivity, and it can rapidly release and convert stored magnetic energy.

Oscillations and symmetry breaking in simple models for polymerisation
23 February 2018

Some fundamental building blocks of living matter, such as amino acids and sugars show the preference of one of the two chiral states of an otherwise chemically identical molecule. The origin of this so-called biological homochirality is still a matter of debate, even after decades of intense theoretical and experimental work.

Resonant Shattering Flares as Counterparts to GW Chirps
16 February 2018

Resonant Shattering Flares (RSFs) are expected to occur during the inspiral phase for some NS-NS and NS-BH mergers. They result from the resonant tidal excitation of the NS crust-core interface mode fracturing the crust and sparking a relativistic pair-photon fireball, emitted seconds before the merger.
