Better health for all
To satisfy this vision our research must make a real impact on health-related problems for the benefit of East London as well as the global population. This vision is underpinned by focused themes, multi-disciplinary themes and cross-cutting themes onto which we will organise our research activities and investment for the next five years. We want to grow by recruiting and retaining academic staff who are current or future world leaders in their fields nurturing their careers in a supportive environment. They will operate in our Institutes to deliver high quality innovative and translational research.

Excellence in research
Our fundamental mission is to ensure that the best possible clinical service is underpinned by the very latest development in scientific and clinical teaching, training and research. We have several marks of esteem in multiple research areas, some of which are indicated below.
In cancer medicine, we hold several centres of excellence like the Barts Cancer Centre; CRUK Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre; Brain Tumour Centre; membership to the CRUK City of London programme. In cardiovascular medicine, we renewed the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, established the multidisciplinary Cardiovascular Devices Hub (EU-funded) and awarded the BHF Accelerator Award. As founding members of the Health Data Research UK London Centre, with Wellcome funding, we expanded our flagship East London Genes and Health Consortium study, increased our community volunteer recruitment resulting in nearly 50,000 British-Bangladeshi study enrolments. Finally, the Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry holds the only mental health-related WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health Service Development.
As founding member of the UCL Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre and Network, we have supported initiatives across north east London reaching 6 million patients. We have been awarded NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North Thames and NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) North Thames. In 2020, we became member of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research.

Our research facilities
Our research is underpinned by cutting edge technologies to deliver our bench-to-bedside-to-people world class research. Excellence in genomic, functional genomics and post-genomic analyses allow us to maximise our collaborative links within Queen Mary and Barts Health NHS Trust, East London Foundation Trust (ELFT), the Homerton Hospital as well as UCL Partners.
