Welcome: What is Linguistics? In this session, Dr Salina Cuddy, will introduce a variety of ways you can approach the study of language. You will discover key aspects of the field of language research that are offered at Queen Mary University London, and hear about some of the modules that you can take with us. 

Case Study: Language and social class in Britain. The study of language and social class in part of the very foundation of sociolinguistic research. In this talk, we will discuss the different ways we try to categorise something as complicated as social class. We will then look more closely at several fascinating studies that attempt to connect how speakers use language in connection to their social class.

Q & A with current students: This slot is your chance to ask our current students about the programme, the modules they’ve taken, living in London, etc. 

Advice/Questions/Personal Statement: We’ll wrap up by giving you a chance to ask any questions.

This taster session is suitable for Years 10 to 13; no prior knowledge of the subject is necessary.
