Linguistics Taster

When: Wednesday, November 23, 2022, 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Where: Online

Taster Session Schedule

5.00pm - Welcome: What is Linguistics? In this session, Dr Salina Cuddy, will introduce some of the different ways you can approach the study of language. You will discover some of the key fields of language research that are offered at Queen Mary University London and hear about some of the modules that you can take with us.

5.15pm - Case Study: Interrogating Gender and Language. Do you think that men and women speak differently from each other?  We see in books, newspapers, magazines, and social media that men and women speak “two different languages”.  In this session, we will look more closely to see if there is research to support this belief, and question the significance of these differences.

5.40pm - Q & A with current students: This slot is your chance to ask our current students about the programme, the modules they’ve taken, living in London, etc.

5.50pm - Advice/Questions: We’ll wrap up by giving you a chance to ask any questions.

This taster session is suitable for Years 10 to 13; no prior knowledge of the subject is necessary.
