Root homonymy vs. root identity

Hebrew is typically understood to possess several hundreds of roots, whereas English several tens of thousands. This talk focuses on languages somewhere in the middle, where it is sometimes difficult to tell between homonymous roots versus the same root deriving many (and sometimes very different) words. I will present four learning principles employed by learners of such languages in order for them to decide if two forms belong to the same root or not, and I will discuss how these principles interact with grammar.
