As Convenor of the Insessional Programme, Alan has responsibility for language courses helping Overseas and Home students improve their English and Study Skills while studying for degree programmes in Queen Mary. Alan has also directed courses for Korean, Iranian and Spanish students. Alan formerly directed the Presessional Programme, from 2003 to 2012 and modules on the Science and Engineering Programme (SEFP) from 2004 to 2016. Alan graduated in German from Bristol University (1973) and subsequently obtained an MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from Reading University (1991). He worked for the British Council for 16 years, being Assistant Director of Studies in Tokyo (from 1992), Deputy Director in Kuala Lumpur (from 1995) and Manager of Kyoto, Japan (from 1999 to 2002). He has also worked in Saudi Arabia, Sweden, France, Germany, Switzerland and Israel. He has been a team leader, writer and external examiner for the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate and Royal Society of Arts among others, for over 25 years. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and formerly External Examiner for Nottingham Trent University.
