Scholarships

Queen Mary Language Scholarships Scheme: This scheme is open only to returning undergraduate students.

Details of the scheme

  • Students can apply for a scholarship to take one module per year
  • The language module you take is non-credit bearing and will not be part of your main programme of study
  • You are expected to attend all classes (two hours per week in both semesters) and complete in-class assessments and coursework, but you will not take the final language examination

Who can apply?

  • The scheme is open to undergraduate students, and aimed primarily at students who have completed at least one year of study and are familiar with the workloads at university. Previous scholarship recipients can apply again
  • We hope to extend the scheme to postgraduate students in future years

What to think about when applying

  • Check the list below to see which languages and levels are available under the Queen Mary  Language Scholarships Scheme
  • Think about how the language fits with what you are studying and how it might benefit you in the future
  • Check that you are applying for the right level of language module – you should complete the diagnostic test here before applying unless you are a beginner in the language
  • Check whether the language module you wish to study runs at a suitable time for you. We want you to be able to complete the module

How to apply

  • Complete the diagnostic test if you are applying for French, German, Spanish, Japanese or Mandarin Chinese
  • Complete the Scholarship Application Form
  • We will then send the form to your School/Institute. They will indicate if they are happy to support the application
  • All applications need to be supported by a student’s home School/Institute
  • The final allocation of scholarships will be made by a central panel

Deadline for applications

  • Sunday 16 June 2019 at 11:55 pm

When will successful candidates be informed?

  • By Thursday 1 August 2019

What else is available?

  • Your School/Institute may also be able to support you in studying a language. Please contact your School/Institute office directly to see what is available
  • You can enrol as a self-payer later in the summer. Further information will be available later in the summer

Languages available under the Queen Mary Language Scholarship Scheme

We offer French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Modern Arabic and Spanish under the scheme, but not all languages are available at every entry level. Please check the list below to see whether the language you are interested in matches your existing knowledge; you should also confirm your entry level by taking the diagnostic test where applicable. All modules run for two hours per week for two semesters.
