At Queen Mary, University London, we pride ourselves on our interconnectedness of theory and practice in film. Our MA programme offers you the opportunity to choose a specific pathway and combine it with elements of theory and practice. The three pathways we offer are Film Theory, Documentary Practice and Directing Fiction.
You’ll attend a fascinating series of lectures, screenings and seminars which will be combined with independent production work.
You'll also take an active role in your own learning through independent study, reading, and writing assignments.
We want you to get the best from your studies, so you'll be paired with your own Academic Adviser, who'll support you academically and pastorally along the way.
For all students wishing to take any practice modules or pathways there will be a non-assessed foundational technical module in the first semester. This is a pre-requisite for anyone wishing to take any practice modules in any of the two semesters.
Each pathway has:
2 compulsory modules (one in each semester)
2-4 elective modules (including one from another University of London institution)
Final dissertation – this can be either practice-based or theory based.
Each module is assessed, and marks carry towards your MA mark. Assessments are all either essays, portfolios, productions or combinations of these. There are no exams.
Semester 1 & 2 you take 2 modules – (3 if you select 2 form the undergraduate syllabus)
Summer term (May – September) – you take independent study with supervision to produced either a 12,000 dissertation on chosen topic or you make a 20 minute film with a 5000 word essay and an accompanying portfolio.
