This session explores the epic Old English poem Beowulf. We will consider Beowulf's fights with the ogre Grendel, his angry mother, and a dragon. What differentiates humans from monsters in the poem? What is a monster anyway? And what makes any of this the subject of some of the finest poetry written in English? Participants will have the opportunity to hear Old English and to speak some themselves.
