Modernism Now! Conference

26 June 2014 - 28 June 2014

Time: 1:00 - 1:00am
Venue: IES, Senate House

Modernism Now! is a three-day international, interdisciplinary conference organised by the British Association for Modernist Studies, designed to explore modernisms throughout the late nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries.  The conference aims to discuss the past achievements of modernism, its possible futures, and to provide a review of current activity in the field. In Modernism and Theory, Neil Levi has recently suggested that in thinking about modernism we consider ‘the idea of a contemporary perpetuation of artistic modernism’ and that we see ‘modernist works as events whose implications demand continued investigation.’

The highlights of the conference include keynotes from Jacqueline Rose and Tyrus Miller (University of California). There will be panels on topics including Modern Periodical Studies, Modernism and the Life Sciences, Late Modernist Temporalities, Global Modernisms ,Modernism & Postwar Experimental Writing & 21st Century Modernisms. There will also be single-author panels on, among others, Beckett, Woolf, Pound, Lawrence, May Sinclair, Gertrude Stein and 'Joyce has got a lot to answer for.'

SED's input includes papers from David James on 'Regional Modernist Fiction and the Politics of Recuperation', Ben Poore, Helen Tyson, Niall Gildea, David Wylot, Clara Jones, Isabelle Parkinson & Elizabeth Brunton.

Registration is at: http://www.ies.sas.ac.uk/events/ies-conferences/ModernismNow.
