Research Process: Intro - The Reading Room Method

The research process consisted of two distinct phases:

Preparation Phase:

  • analysis & deconstruction of each text, along with secondary research;
  • reading texts for timings;
  • developing the conceptual dimensions, aesthetic landscapes and logics of each Reading Room;
  • mapping structure, timelines and creating draft performance scores;
  • drawing up ground plans and models of the physical space, designing garments and defining the material lexicons;
  • making physical objects, audio & video projections;
  • pre-event work with the invited Actioneers/Performers and Readers.

Event Phase:

  • the research process was further developed and conducted live within the Reading Rooms. Each Reading Room event acted as a real-time performative research studio/laboratory.

The Research Process materials are presented under three main headings:

  • Research Process 1: EXPANDED WRITING & READING
  • Research Process 2: SPACES for REVERIE & LIVE RESEARCH
  • Research Process 3: COLLABORATION as COMBATIVE CO-EXISTENCE
  • Research Process 4: PERFORMANCE SCORES
