Research Culture

Our research is motivated by a spirit of intellectual and creative adventurous enquiry and an ethical commitment to social justice.

Our commitment to social justice is evident in, for example, our interrogation of the practices, achievements and limits of socially engaged performance, and our examination of the material and ideological conditions that affect the making and reception of performance in different cultural and historical contexts.

Formally, our research is disseminated both in practice – for example, as performances, workshops and play scripts – and in such scholarly forms as monographs, edited collections, journal articles and book chapters.

Our teaching is research-led. We engage all our students – whether studying for a BA, MA, or PhD – in the latest important developments in research in our fields. All staff members are active researchers, and their pages highlight their current research interests and recent publications and performances. We welcome Visiting Scholars to join us at Queen Mary to work on their research.
