Project title: New Materials for Next Generation Battery Systems
Summary: There is much research being conducted into new types of batteries as an alternative to those based on lithium. A particular problem of lithium ion batteries is the flammable electrolyte used and the expense of Li and Co, the latter used in the cathode. New technologies include all solid state battery systems and batteries based on Na+ ion conduction as well as divalent cations like Mg2+. The present work focuses on developing new materials for these new battery systems, including electrical and structural characterisation.
