Project title: Plant allergens

Summary: The long term objective is to discover a way of protecting people from the effects of plant allergens. This project involves exploring the structure and function of plant allergens, determining the parts that are hyper-allergenic, how they interact with the immune system, and working towards potential treatments. The aims are:

1. Characterization of plant allergens using bioinformatics, mass-spectrometry and sequencing. Determination of the degree of post-translational modification of these allergens.
2. Recombinant expression of plant allergens.
3. Structural studies of the allergens using bioinformatics, CD spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.
4. Studies of how these allergens interact with the immune system.
