Project title: Expressing the key photoprotective protein of diatom algae, LHCX1, in higher plants
Summary: Photosynthetic organisms are able to dissipate excess absorbed energy as heat via nonphotochemical quenching(NPQ). This process relies on conformational change of major light-harvesting complex LHCII in higher plants, which undergoes aggregation mediated by PSII subunit S(PsbS) protein. While in diatoms, LHCX1 acts as a major effector. This project will focus on the structural basis of superprotective mechanisms of PsbS and LHCX1. Gene sequences of both proteins with/without specific mutations will be introduced into Arabidopsis PsbS mutants. The complete spectrum of LHCII, the localization of LHCX1 protein and the potential structural alterations will be detected in the constructed plants.
