Newsletter 2004 was prepared for publication by Professor R.C. Cammack.

The Biochemical Nomenclature Committee comprises the IUPAC-IUBMB Joint Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature (JCBN) and the Nomenclature Committee of IUBMB (NC-IUBMB). It is supported jointly by IUBMB and IUPAC, and its aims are "to aid communication of biochemical information by encouraging scientists to use generally understood terminology; to consider the nomenclature, classification and symbolic representation of compounds of biochemical interest, including macromolecules, and, where appropriate, to make recommendations." Recommended nomenclature is for use in publications and biochemical databases. A review of the activities of the Committee has been published [1].
