Time: 1:00 - 2:00pm Speaker: Sarah Harpenslager, SBCS Postdoctoral ResearcherVenue: Fogg Lecture Theatre, Fogg Building
In the second of the SBCS' Inspiring Talks series, Postdoctoral Researcher Sarah Harpenslager will discuss her career path into research and her experience working in the field with an all female team of biologists in some of the harshest environments on the planet.
During the summers of 2016 and 2017, Sarah Harpenslager and her team embarked on a series of expeditions to the Arctic. They travelled to remote locations in Iceland, Greenland, Alaska, Kamchatka and Svalbard to conduct scientific research on the effects of climate change in these regions. In addition to tackling the tough physical conditions, they also experienced many examples of unconscious bias, with most people they came across associating science and field work with men rather than women.
Attendees will learn about Sarah's career path into research and what it's like to work in the areas around the Arctic Circle. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session with Sarah.
This event is free to attend and open to all.
