Our research policies are intended to ensure that research and innovation is most effectively fostered, as well as conducted and disseminated to the highest standards. These policies include:

Equality and Diversity
Queen Mary has an active and long-standing commitment to equality and diversity principles in all aspects of its work. For detailed information, please see our Equality and Diversity website
Queen Mary holds a Silver Athena SWAN Award for excellence in our commitment to gender equality and each School and Institute is committed to obtaining individual awards. We are a partner in the B-MEntor scheme for black and ethnic minority academics and researchers, are a member of the Stonewall Diversity Champion programme and hold an annual Diversity Fortnight to highlight issues.
We support the following with regard to Open Access for research outputs:
- Queen Mary is committed to the general principle of Open Access publication of research
- Individual researchers or research collaborations should continue to freely choose to disseminate their research via those routes of their choice that are internationally recognised for their high standards and that are appropriate for maximising the impact of the research on the intended audience.
With regard to particular routes of publication, we favour Open Access by the Green route, with authors self-archiving their work, preferably in the QMUL repository as this develops to a more comprehensive archive of our research; however we will support Gold access where researchers see this as academically necessary, subject to available funding. We recognise that a transition to full Open Access of research publications will take a number of years and that over time the availability and affordability of different routes will change. Research Data – Access and Management
We are also committed to the principle of Open Access to research data – interpreted broadly as the materials underlying research results. However there are a range of necessary constraints on this imposed by legal, ethical or funder requirements, and our policy on this is necessarily more nuanced. The proper management of any stored research data also involves a number of issues. Here is our Research Data Access and Management Policy [PDF 39KB].
We wish to clearly encourage our researchers to develop their work into applications outside academia where they wish to do so, and to provide the practical and financial support needed. Our IP Policy contains a number of incentives for innovation, and a new policy is currently being prepared that will develop these as well as cover more explicitly a number of other areas such as copyright, software and archives, performance rights, etc.
Research Integrity and Ethics
Queen Mary is committed to producing and promoting high quality research that is conducted according to the highest standards of integrity. To support these aims, in all fields of research, Queen Mary has adopted the commitments of the UUK Concordat to Support Research Integrity.
The senior member of staff with leadership oversight for research integrity is the Vice-Principal (Research), Professor Andrew Livingston.
The QMUL Ethics of Research Committee exists to provide oversight of any ethical issues arising in connection with research and to ensure that appropriate systems are in place so that research at Queen Mary is always conducted with full awareness of ethical issues, and necessary precautions and actions taken to preserve high ethical standards.
The Audit and Risk Committee, a sub-committee of our governing Council, is responsible for reviewing the annual report from the Vice-Principal (Research) on research integrity and research misconduct.

Concordat to support the career development of researchers
Queen Mary is committed to the seven principles enunciated in the Concordat to support the career development of researchers. Queen Mary holds the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award in recognition of our continued commitment to the development of our researchers. Involvement of Animals in Research
Queen Mary is committed to the highest ethical, humane and welfare standards relating to the use of animals in research. Work in this area is overseen by our Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body.
We work at all times towards achieving the '3Rs' – Replacement, Reduction and Refinement – with respect to research requiring the use of animals. We host the world’s first Professorial Chair dedicated to animal replacement science, in collaboration with the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research (DHT). This recognises our pioneering work in the development of in-vitro models using human cells and tissues, and, in particular, the development of three-dimensional models.
Queen Mary University of London is a signatory to the ARRIVE (Animal Research: Reporting of InVivo Experiments) Guidelines which were developed as part of an initiative by the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3R) to improve the design, analysis and reporting of research using animals – maximising information published and minimising unnecessary studies. We have also recently signed the Concordat on Openness in Animal Research, which means we are committed to being more open about the ways in which animals are used in scientific, medical and veterinary research in the UK.
High standards of humane care and treatment of animals undergoing procedures are adhered to at all times. Any member of Queen Mary staff conducting experiments involving animals has to undergo training, have relevant experience and be authorised by the Home Office via a licensing system. The Home Office Inspectorate regularly inspects the facilities along with our own appointed veterinary surgeons. Further information about the use of animals in research can be found here.
