Digital media becomes ever more advanced and ubiquitous. The MSc in Sound and Music Computing responds to a growing need for engineers and computer scientists trained specifically in sound and music processing.

What you'll study

You will gain an understanding of the design and software development process for music recording, analysis and synthesis for home, studio and live performance environments. You will study data analysis and signal processing techniques related to human speech and hearing, psychoacoustics and masking, and instrument and room acoustics.

You will begin by studying music perception and cognition. If you require further background on digital signal processing (DSP), you can take a module in the fundamentals of DSP. Thereafter, you can choose from a range of modules, focusing on areas such as recording and mixing, music production, audio processing, digital effects, machine listening, interactive sound and music systems, music information retrieval, new instrument design, musical expression.

The taught modules are fully supported with computing and laboratory work.

You will devise and carry out a major dissertation, which you can choose to do in collaboration with an industrial partner.

During your industry placement, you will learn to apply key technical knowledge and skills from your taught modules in the workplace; enhancing your employment potential and understanding where you need to improve. You will secure the placement yourself with support from the Placement Team. This module is only open to students enrolled on the programme of study with integrated placement.

Project

The aim of the MSc project is to give students the opportunity to apply to a significant advanced project, the techniques and technologies, that they have learned in their lecture modules. Projects will either be significantly development based, or else have a research focus. All projects will be expected either to investigate or to make use of techniques that are at the leading edge of the field. Candidates will be asked to submit a project report on completion of the allotted project period (3 months full time). This report will be evaluated using the standard criteria for scholarly work. Projects will also include a viva where students will be required to demonstrate and defend their work.

MSc Industrial Placement Project

The industrial placement project consists of 8-12 months spent working with an appropriate employer in a role that relates directly to your field of study. The placement is undertaken between the taught component and the project. This will provide you with the opportunity to apply the key technical knowledge and skills that you have learnt in your taught modules, and will enable you to gain a better understanding of your own abilities, aptitudes, attitudes and employment potential. The module is only open to students enrolled on a programme of study with integrated placement.

Fundamentals of DSP

Introduction: Why DSP, sampling, quantization, Signals, LTI systems, Z transforms and polynomials, DFT, FFT, Spectrum Analysis, FIR filters, IIR filters

Music Perception and Cognition

Music is a fundamental part of being human and exists only in the mind of the listener. This module will provide students with advanced training in current understanding of how musical sound is processed by the mind and brain. This is crucial for developing creative tools for musicians and intuitive interfaces for music lovers as well as for using technology in the creative production of new music.

Elective modules

Interactive Digital Multimedia Techniques

This is a Master's level course in developing real-time interactive digital media systems. The course will focus on graphics and sound programming, with a secondary emphasis on basic electronic hardware design for sensors and human-computer interfaces. The course will employ widely-used development environments including Arduino, Processing Max/MSP and Jitter, Processing. Course material will be delivered through a combination of lectures, interactive lab sessions, and individual/group exercises (both in and out of class). Generally speaking, each class period will consist of a combination of lecture and interactive lab session.

Real-Time DSP

This module will provide training in the use of the latest programmable DSP devices. The module is examined entirely through coursework. Students will use TI DSP chips to undertake various exercises and projects. The module will also cover: * Introdution to Real Time DSP Systems * Basic CPU Architecture * The TI C6xxx Architecture * Introduction to Code Composer Studio * Coding numerical issues

Interactive System Design

The main areas of study are (i) interaction and design (ii) modelling of interaction (iii) the design process (iv) design principles and (v) usability evaluation. Various types of interfaces will be considered including those encountered on the web and mobile computing devices. A historical perspective is encouraged in order to provide a means of understanding current and projected developments in the discipline and profession of interactive computer system design. The module will include seminars and group laboratory classes in which analysis, design and evaluation methods will be used in practical contexts. Students will be expected to participate fully in the seminars by presenting and discussing their own designs and evaluations. Students will be required to construct prototype interfaces using techniques of their own choice (e.g. Java, Director).

The Semantic Web

The idea of putting semantic information on the Web has been around for a long time: we now have the beginnings of a practical application. This has its foundations in what is called Description Logic, which strikes a good balance between tractability and usability. This has led to a Web language called OWL, which is at the centre of modern work on the Semantic Web: there are now useful implementations, and there are workable, if modest, applications of this technology.

Machine Learning

This course covers methods for machine learning from signals and data, including statistical pattern recognition methods, neural networks, and clustering. The aim of the course is to give you an understanding of machine learning methods, including pattern recognition, clustering and neural networks, and to allow you to apply such methods in a range of areas.

Digital Audio Effects

This module covers the entire field of digital audio effects, including some depth in the subfields and related subjects. It is concerned with the use of digital signal processing and its applications to the creation or modification of sounds and sound effects. It explains what can be done in the digital processing of sounds in the form of computer algorithms and sound examples resulting from these transformations. It describes signal processing concepts and software implementations, as well as advances in filters, delays, modulators, and time-frequency processing of sound. It primarily covers time-domain, non- linear, time-segment, time-frequency, source-filter, spectral, bitstream signal processing, spatial effects, time and frequency warping, and the control of audio effects.

Sound Recording and Production Techniques

The module develops the students' skills and understanding of contemporary audio production techniques. It will give the students a good grounding in the theoretical aspects of audio production, from the functionality of audio interfaces to the signal processing within audio effects, as well as providing practical experience in the use of all audio equipment to which the theory applies. The students will learn the implications of audio digitisation, through which they will gain an understanding of the various means by which digital media is disseminated in the modern age.

Music Analysis and Synthesis

This module is intended to provide students with advanced training in standard and state-of-the-art techniques for music analysis and synthesis. This knowledge is relevant for the music generation, processing, recording, reproduction and distribution industries, with special emphasis on music-oriented on-line services and the development of hardware and software for musicians, musicologists, sound engineers and producers. Background in digital signal processing is essential for the understanding of analysis and synthesis processes on musical signals.

Big Data Processing

The 12 week module involves 2 hours of timetabled lectures per week. Laboratory sessions are timetabled at 2 hours per week for 6 to 7 weeks only. The module syllabus adopts a hands-on programming stance. In addition it focuses on algorithms and architectures to familiarise students with message-passing systems ((MPI) as adopted by industry. Parallel computing, which implies the simultaneous execution of several processes for solving a single problem, is a mainstream subject with wide ranging implications for computer architecture, algorithms design and programming. The UK has been at the forefront of this technology through its involvement in the development of several innovative architectures.Queen Mary has been involved with Parallel Computing for more than a decade. In this module, students will be introduced to parallel computing and will gain firsthand experience in relevant techniques.

Teaching

Teaching for all modules includes a combination of lectures, seminars and use of a virtual learning environment. Each module provides contact time with your lecturers, supported by lab work and directed further study.

You will be assigned an Academic Adviser who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary.

Divided into a Performance Lab, Control Room, and Recording/Listening Room, its equipment includes various acoustic and electronic musical instruments, state-of-the-art mixers and surround sound systems, a high-speed motion capture system and video cameras.

School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science

The School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science is well known for its pioneering research. Some of our researchers are currently discovering how to allow robots to express human emotion and using beat tracking to synchronise computers with live music performance.
