Global British Studies MA

Part of: History

Global British Studies is an exciting field that takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Britain in a global context over the past two centuries. The programme will challenge assumptions that Britain simply made the modern world and instead encourage students to unravel complex and at times contradictory ways in which an imperial metropole like Britain has been connected to the rest of the world. In light of Brexit and public debates on British identity and the legacies of Empire, this programme provides historical perspectives on some of the biggest contemporary questions.

What you'll study

The MA in Global British Studies provides a rare opportunity to reassess the cultural, social and political history of Britain within the broader context of its Empire and wider global forces. You will be taught by some of the foremost experts in their respective fields, whose knowledge and expertise complement one another.

The programme comprises two thematically comprehensive core modules, as well as a range of optional modules. It will provide a coherent and flexible framework within which you are able to develop your own research in areas of your choice, including:

  • Britain and the World
  • Politics and the Global British State
  • Empire, Race and Decolonisation
  • Culture, Class and Gender
  • Science, Technology and Emotions
  • Global East London

In addition to working alongside a supervisor on your own research-dissertation, you will be part of a cohort of students together exploring the making and unmaking of modern Britain and the world during weekly seminars. The MA in Global British Studies encourages interdisciplinary enquiry and its rigorous approach will be of particular benefit to those planning to pursue doctoral work, preparatory to an academic career.

In addition to the use of Queen Mary library, you will have access to outstanding research libraries, including the British Library, Senate House Library, the Warburg Institute Library, the Wellcome Library, the Institute for Historical Research Library and the Black Cultural Archives.

Structure

  • Two compulsory core modules, one during Autumn semester and one during Spring semester
  • Two elective options, chosen from a range of available modules (see below)
  • Dissertation (written after the Spring semester, between April and September)

Compulsory/Core modules

Dissertation - MA Global British Studies

The MA Dissertation provides an opportunity for you to complete an in-depth research project within an area of historical inquiry developed with the help of your supervisor. You will be encouraged to pursue your own intellectual interests in relation to your previous research on the compulsory and elective modules of the programme and apply the skills and approaches you have learned. You will work alongside a supervisor and receive a total of 6 hours of individual supervision during Semester B and the summer period. In Semester B, you will furthermore present your project at the MA dissertation colloquium, where you will also receive feedback from your peers and other members of staff. The core module in Semester B, 'Engaging Global British studies' is also designed to give you an understanding and awareness, at an advanced level, of the conceptual and methodological challenges of conducting an extended research project. You will then engage in self-led research directed towards the completion of an assessed 15,000 word dissertation, from April to submission in early September.

Britain Rewritten: Key Texts in Global British Studies

This module will introduce you to some of the most innovative and engaging works within the broad area of global British history as it has developed over the past few decades. The module takes the form of a master-class and we will read key texts alongside reviews and academic discussions to fully illuminate the approach and contribution of the individual work within a broader context. Approaching global British history through specific examples will provide you with a solid historiographical awareness, but also familiarize you with a collection of scholarly texts as examples of different academic approaches. The authors we will be covering include Antoinette Burton, Catherine Hall, Paul Gilroy and James Vernon.

Engaging Global British Studies

In this core module, we explore key concepts, debates, approaches and methodologies in the emergent field of global British history. Taking global London as its historical point of reference, it explores the possibilities of global British history and considers how different approaches may challenge and enhance nation-centric and regional or area studies approaches. The module is designed to equip you with a new set of theoretical tools with which to interrogate global British history in the broadest sense. Furthermore, it will provide you with the skills required to confidently engage in research and to develop your own dissertation, in addition to acquiring key transferable skills such as writing and presenting research in different contexts.

Elective modules

The Lives and Afterlives of Empire

In this module, we explore key themes and frameworks for analysing the British Empire: imperial labour and resource practices, migration of people and objects, education and the `civilising mission¿, violence and resistance, racial and sexual boundaries, and cultural exchange. We do so by recognising that each of these aspects of the Empire have become contested legacies in modern Britain, as well as its former colonies. Throughout the module, we unpack the deep history of the events, objects and issues that continue to inform the public debate, including the Rhodes Must Fall movement, the Windrush scandal, the commemoration of the abolition of slavery, the Mau Mau compensation case, the calls for repatriation of looted artefacts, and, finally, the current culture wars. Rather than merely promoting one particular view, the module is aimed at cultivating a critical and reflective engagement with the lives and afterlives of Empire and the ways that British society has been, and continues to be, shaped by a global past.

Gender, Class and Culture in Global Britain

In this module, we explore key themes and frameworks for understanding the social and cultural history of global Britain during the 'short' twentieth century. The module explores continuities and changes in gender, class, national and international identities in a variety of global contexts through the ways in which they were represented in popular culture at the time. After a two-week introduction focusing on chronologies, trajectories and methodologies, each week of the module tackles a different theme (for example, 'childhood', 'growing up', 'work', 'home', 'race', 'faith', 'spending', 'war', 'travel') through the exploration of key texts (including some of the following: films, television and radio programmes, works of visual art, songs, novels and newspapers) and their reception.

Science, Technology and Empire

In this module, we explore the role of science, technology and medicine in the formation of empire and within a global framework. The module is organized in four broad sections: 1) core concepts - in which key concepts from science and technology studies (such as bio-politics and actor network theory) are introduced and their utility for social, political and imperial history explored; 2) bodies - examining the relationship between natural history, new technology and global trade in shaping connections between colony and metropole; 3) minds - investigating the role of the human sciences (psychology, psychiatry and anthropology in particular) in making possible new kinds of subjectivity in the colonizer and the colonized; 4) populations - exploring the way that animal and human populations are imagined in the new sciences and turned into subjects of government.

Politics, Power and the Global British State

In this module, you will examine the evolution of British political culture and the way this has been bound up with the changing place of Britain in the world. It does so by approaching the British State through a series of conceptual prisms, each of which offers a distinct perspective on the modern evolution of the State. We aim to open up to critical analysis some of the key transformations that have occurred in British political life, including: democratization; the creation of the welfare state; decentralisation and devolution; and the building of the "war state". At every stage, the emphasis is on the way in which the process of State formation and change has been contested, contingent and riven with complexity.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by coursework and a 15,000-word dissertation.

Dissertation

You will also be assessed on a supervised 15,000-word dissertation, which you will be developing alongside your supervisor. Dissertation supervision is available from a broad range of faculty in the School of History, and potential dissertation subjects include:

  • Black Britain
  • Political, cultural and social legacies of Empire
  • London: East End and the imperial city
  • Feminism and the rights of women
  • Gender, culture and society in 20th century Britain
  • Psychology, Sex and Chemistry in Modern Britain
  • Emotions in Modern British History
  • Migration and the reimagining of ‘Britain’
  • The War on Terror
  • Thatcher’s Britain
  • Representing the two World Wars in Britain

Teaching

Most classes are taught through extended seminars, with independent work completed outside these hours.

You'll also take an active role in your own learning through independent study, reading, and writing essays.

We want you to get the best from your studies, so you'll be paired with your own Academic Adviser, who will support you academically and pastorally along the way.
