What you'll study
You’ll learn the fundamental laws, physical principles and applications of materials on this wide-reaching MSc. This programme will cover advanced concepts and techniques, leaving you well prepared for further doctoral-level study. The programme also develops skills you can transfer to a wide range of careers.
You’ll complete a specialist independent research project, under the supervision of an academic with research interests in a similar area to your own. You’ll develop a sophisticated understanding of research methodology, and how to manage your own research, making use of journal articles and other primary sources.
You’ll join a thriving, friendly research community, with a busy schedule of research seminars, colloquia, meetings and workshops (as well as regular social events), so you can make the most of the specialist research skills you’ll develop on this course.
We pride ourselves on our collaborations and networks: we are a member of SEPnet, which among other advantages, gives you access to GRADnet, the largest physics postgraduate school in England. As a Queen Mary student, you’ll also be able to take physics modules from University College London, King's College London or the Royal Holloway University of London, at the programme director's discretion.
Additional costs
As a Queen Mary student, you’ll also be able to take physics modules from University College London, King's College London or the Royal Holloway University of London. You'll need to organise and pay for any additional or different travel arrangements for these modules.
The School may be able to assist with applications for additional funding to support studies or research trips.
Structure
- One compulsory taught module - Electronic Structure Methods
- Seven elective taught modules - view the full list of elective modules here
- Research project (of 10,000 words)
Compulsory/Core modules
The MSc Research Project is at the heart of the MSc programme. It is an independent project undertaken by the student within a working research group in the School. The project runs over three semesters in order to allow for the student to both design their project (using available literature etc.), be trained in the relevant techniques and carry out a reasonably substantial piece of research based on an actual (real) research problem.
Elective modules
Superfluids, Condensates and Superconductors.
The module will cover the basics of string theory including the classical relativistic physics of the string, its quantisation and the resulting spectrum. This will then be extended to examine so called p-branes and the basics of M-theory.
Order and Excitations in Condensed Matter
Statistical Data Analysis
Physics at the Nanoscale
Quantum Computation and Communication
Assessment
- 67% Modules
- 33% Research project
- Most modules are assessed by a final exam (typically 90% of the mark) and coursework
- Your research project is assessed by a final written report, a student presentation, oral examination and on your performance during the project
Research project
You’ll write a final report on your research project of up to 10,000 words. This research project forms a major component of your degree. It is a fantastic opportunity to carry out high-level work, supervised by a member of academic staff. It is also the best possible preparation for a PhD.
Recent research report titles have included:
- Study of potential materials for the capture of carbon dioxide
- Investigating neutron scattering data in formate materials
- Prototyping a medical device for peripheral neuropathy
Teaching
Most of this MSc is taught in lectures. We have small class sizes and you’ll have ample access to teaching staff in their scheduled office hours.
You’ll have three hours of lectures per module and normally four taught modules per semester. You’ll also undertake a large amount of personal study, reading widely around your subject.
Your research project will require personal research, undertaken independently under the guidance of your academic supervisor.
You’ll be assigned an Academic Adviser who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary. You’ll also gain additional support from your research project supervisor.
Where you'll learn
Facilities
- Equipment for the production of nanotubes and functionalised fullerenes
- Laser ablation facilities to produce nanoparticles
- Super-fast research networks and worldwide grid computing facilities, such as MidPlus and GridPP
- Experimental facilities, such as clean rooms, workshops and laboratories
- An advanced Renishaw inVia Raman confocal microscope
- Materials Research Institute (MRI) laboratories
Campus
Your postgraduate learning experience is enhanced by our fantastic location in Mile End, in east London.
We are fortunate enough to be close to the Central, District and Hammersmith and City lines, so you’ll have easy access to materials in the University of London Library at Senate House, the individual libraries of the various colleges of the University of London, as well as the specialist library of the Royal Astronomical Society. The outstanding collections at the British Library are also close at hand.
The School takes advantage of its London location and our excellent transport links to attract an impressive range of visitors, seminar speakers and to facilitate our international research network, so you can develop your studies within a global context.
About the School
School of Physical and Chemical Sciences
The School of Physical and Chemical Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Queen Mary University of London.
The Department of Physics and Chemical Sciences has an international reputation for its research across areas such as experimental particle physics, materials physics, string theory and astronomy. Due to the outstanding quality of our academics' research, we were ranked joint first out of all physics departments in London, in the last National Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014).
Our research groups have played a role in some of the most exciting discoveries of the past 100 years. These include Rutherford's discovery of the atomic nucleus, the first 'superstring revolution' and the discovery of Proxima b.
We pride ourselves on our diversity and our friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We are also proud to be IoP Juno Champions, recipients of an Athena Swan Silver Award, and are a Living Wage employer.

—Physics has given me the patience to solve problems, given very little initial information. This is exactly what is needed for a career in data science. Although the maths is different, the skills are transferable. Additionally, my Master's dissertation involved using MATLAB for complex mathematical modelling, which has helped with my current role, as well as understanding how to use other computer programs for data structuring.
Geeta Patel, MSc Astrophysics, 2017
Career paths
Our researchers work closely with leading research groups around the world and we have a track record in preparing students for PhD places at these institutions. On this MSc, you’ll be given comprehensive training in research methods, substantial independent project work and access to the expertise of the department.
The high level of mathematics covered in the course will also prepare you for a career in a range of other industries where these skills are in high demand, such as finance.
Recent graduates of our MSc programmes have gone on to PhD studies and positions such as:
- Business and data analyst
- Consultant
- Data scientist
- Programming analyst
In organisations including:
- Plasmonics, King’s College London
- HSBC Global Banking and Markets
- JDX FinTech Solutions
