Applied Data Analytics Online MSc

Businesses and organisations collect and produce enormous amounts of data and they rely on experts who can use mathematical and statistical techniques to analyse, manipulate and present this data. Data specialists are responsible for extracting clear insights that companies and organisations can use to inform strategy and operations.

This online Applied Data Analytics MSc will teach you the core mathematical and statistical theories of data analysis and how these are applied to real-world scenarios.

  • Learn with expert academics with several years' industry experience, including Fellows of the prestigious Alan Turing Institute
  • Grow your skillset in data and programming software including R, SAS, Excel and Python
  • Develop the core mathematical foundations required for long term career success in a rapidly evolving industry
  • Suitable for graduates from mathematical/numerate degree subjects, such as maths, statistics, physics, engineering, economics and computer science
  • Flexible online learning through Coursera allows you to fit your studies around your personal and work life

Compulsory/Core modules

This module aims at providing students with Machine Learning skills which will be primarily based on the Python programming language as it is currently used in industry. Some of the presented methods are regression and classification techniques (linear and logistic regression, least-square); clustering; dimensionality reduction techniques such as PCA, SVD and matrix factorization. More advanced methods will be covered in a follow-up module (Machine Learning 2). The module is self-contained in terms of the necessary mathematical tools (mostly probability). At the end of the module students will be able to formalize a ML task, choose the appropriate method in order to tackle it while being able to assess its performance, and to implement these algorithms in Python.

This module begins by covering some of the essential theoretical notions of probability and the distributions of random variables which underpin statistical methods. It then describes different types of statistical tests of hypotheses and addresses the questions of how to use them and when to use them. This material is essential for the proper use of statistics in applications.

The ability to store, manipulate and display data in appropriate ways is of great importance to data scientists. This module will introduce you to many of the most widely-used techniques in the field. The emphasis of this module is primarily on the interactive use of various IT tools, rather than on programming as such, although in a number of cases you will learn how to develop short programs (scripts) to automate various tasks.

This module will present the techniques of Time Series analysis. These will allow the student to better understand how to use historical data series. The student will learn how to extract any trend and cyclic component of a data series, calculate the autocorrelation, learn about autoregressive and moving average models, and cointegration. The module will develop the notions around realistic financial examples and solutions with hands on experience., specifically in understanding the evolution of financial assets and other more complex data.

The module will cover research methods as well as have a series of independent projects which will build on the skills and techniques learned in the the first year of the programme as well as introducing research methodologies.

The aim of this module is to introduce the student to more advanced machine learning techniques. An emphasis will be on current techniques which are relevant for practical applications. In addition to practical programming assignments, the module will also give the student an understanding of the mathematical underpinning of the techniques and the limitations of the methods which are crucial to aspects in correctly assessing their performance. Building on Machine Learning 1, linear methods will be extended to non-linear settings using kernel methods. The module will also go further in depth with topics which were introduced in the first semester such as neural networks and Monte Carlo Markov Chain methods (MCMC). It will cover specific applications and provide students with an overview of the current state of the art.

This module will present a variety of optimization techniques The topics to be covered are 1. review of one variable case 2. multiple variables 3. optimization with constraints 4. linear programming 5. convex optimization 6. dynamic programming 7. approximation techniques

This module will build upon previously taught statistical methods to show how they can be extended to deal with various issues that arise in realistic data analysis, such as non-normal outcomes, grouped data, non-random samples and missing data. Topics covered will include: generalized linear models; hierarchical models; model checking and model comparison. The methods will be applied to real datasets throughout the module, using the R statistical computing language.

This module focuses on the use of computers for solving numerical problems which arise in applied data analytics. Its aim is to provide students with proper computational tools to solve problems they are likely to encounter when dealing with data, and to provide them with a sound understanding of the numerical issues which arise in the applied sciences, particular in the context of commonly used programming languages such as Python. The topics covered will include basics of scientific programming, polynomial interpolation, numerical differentiation and integration, numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations, random numbers and Monte Carlo methods, simulation of stochastic processes. The emphasis of the module is on numerical aspects of mathematical problems, with a focus on applications rather than theory.

This module will be on the MSc Applied Data Analytics programme delivered via the Coursera platform. It represents a series of projects and research methods to enable the students to learn how to independently apply what they have learned in their modules. This module is the follow-up to Research Methods.

Further information about the modules is available here.
