The Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Clinical Contexts has been specifically designed for doctors, dentists, senior nurses, allied health professionals and academics, involved in undergraduate or postgraduate teaching of clinicians.

Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Clinical Contexts

It aims to attract committed educators working in and around clinical contexts, who seek to both improve teaching and learning and to understand more fully the educational potential of their working environment, i.e. the sort of person who asks these types of questions:-

  • Might there be better ways to motivate and engage learners in clinical education?
  • Do the clinical education programmes I am involved achieve all they could?
  • How might I improve my own practice as an educator, as well as the practice of my colleagues and/or teams?

If these questions resonate with you, then this PG Cert in Education for Clinical Contexts programme will be of particular appeal. Through this programme you will have opportunity to research and improve your teaching practice, as well as developing expertise to lead clinical education programmes in your workplace context.

Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Clinical Contexts

The part time format of this programme, over one year, allows you to maintain the other clinical and teaching commitments that you may have.

Through engaging with this programme you will:

  • Engage with like-minded colleagues in a deep analysis of the nature and dynamics of teaching and learning in clinical education, drawing on a wide range of educational theories;
  • Understand the important relationship between high quality education, effective team working and good patient care;

Why study for your PG Cert in Education for Clinical Contexts at QMUL?

  • The programme will be delivered by Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, one of the leading medical schools in the UK. Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry is comprised of two world renowned teaching hospitals, St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London, which have made, and continue to make, an outstanding contribution to modern medicine. We were one of the top five in the UK for medicine in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
  • The programme will be taught at the Institute of Health Sciences Education (IHSE). The IHSE has a long history in medical and clinical education, offers undergraduate medical and dental training, a range of post-graduate programmes, and an intercalated degree in Medical Education. The IHSE also conducts medical education research, scholarship and evaluations, and leads quality assurance processes for the MBBS and related degrees. 
  • You will be taught by academic staff who are engaged in scholarship at the leading edge of clinical education. The course team are all active clinical educators themselves, and thus are intensely interested in studying the intricate and sometimes problematic relationship between theory and practice in education. 
  • This programme has been designed with the busy professional in mind. Throughout the programme you will be given opportunities to develop knowledge and skills as educators, using your own practice and workplace setting as a research context. By the end of the course you will be well prepared to take up educational leadership roles in your own setting and beyond.  

Facilities

  • You will have access to Queen Mary’s comprehensive libraries, including the Postgraduate Reading Room, and The British Library can also be accessed as a research resource.
  • As well as the book collections within the QMUL library system, we subscribe to a range of journal medical and clinical education journals. These journals can also be accessed electronically.
  • As students of QMUL you will also be able to access other university libraries in the London through the SCONUL scheme.

There are three modules, all of which are compulsory:

  • Teaching and learning for clinical contexts (30 credits)
  • Innovative practices and theories in clinical education (15 credits)
  • Clinical curriculum evaluation and development (15 credits)

If you decide you would like to continue beyond a PG Cert qualification, you can talk to the programme leaders about enrolling in the MA Education for Clinical Contexts programme (which is another two years part-time study, following completion of the PG Cert in Education for Clinical Contexts)

Entry requirements

The programme has been specifically designed for doctors, dentists, senior nurses, allied health professionals and academics, who are involved in undergraduate or postgraduate teaching of clinicians.

At a minimum applicants will normally have a medical / health professional undergraduate degree equivalent to UK second-class honours from a recognised academic institution.

Applicants will also have at least one year of experience in practice as a clinical educator to enrol on the programme. This includes experience includes teaching in the clinical context.

Admission to the course is selective, and based upon academic credentials, research experience, and motivation.   It is expected that all applicants will have both experience and interest in developing teaching. Applicants are required to submit a statement of purpose and letter of recommendation with their application.

Applications are accepted all year round, but there are limited places to ensure high-quality training, so please apply early to avoid disappointment. 

International applicants

If your first language is not English, you must provide evidence of your English language proficiency: a minimum ELTS score of 7.0 is required for this programme.

Learning and teaching

As a student at Queen Mary, you will play an active part in your acquisition of skills and knowledge. Teaching will occur mainly through small group workshops. The workshops are designed to generate informed discussion around set topics, and may involve student presentations, group exercise and role-play as well as open discussion.

The modules in the PG Certificate in Education for Clinical Contexts programme have all been designed with the busy professional in mind. The assignments for each module will engage you in researching and developing clinical education within your own workplace setting.  In this way, concurrent with achieving a postgraduate qualification in clinical education, you will be actively developing your skills in leading the improvement of clinical education.

We take pride in the close and friendly working relationship we have with our students. During the course, module and programme leaders will guide you to help you develop your skill as an educator, curriculum developer and researcher and leader in the field of clinical education.

Independent Study

For every hour spent in classes you will be expected to complete further hours of independent study. Your individual study time could be spent preparing for, or following up on formal study sessions, reading; producing written work; and completing projects.

The direction of your individual study will be guided by the formal study sessions you attend, along with your reading lists and assignments. However, we expect you to demonstrate an active role in your own learning by reading widely and expanding your own knowledge, understanding and critical ability.

Independent study will foster in you the ability to identify your own learning needs and determine which areas you need to focus on to become proficient in your subject area. This is an important transferable skill and will help to prepare you for to focus on specialising in specific areas of clinical education, through the programme.

Assessment

You will be assessed via coursework that engage you in researching and developing clinical education in your own setting. Module leaders will offer you guidance and support in the researching and writing of your coursework assignments. All assignments are written essays, although some modules also have some assessed presentations.

Part time fees are charged per annum over two years for a two year programme and per annum over three years for a three year programme. A percentage increase may be applied to the fees in years two and three.

This increase is defined each year and published on the intranet and in the Tuition Fee Regulations. A 3% increase was applied to the unregulated university fees in 2019/20. Further information can be viewed on our University Fees webpage, including details about annual increases.
