Dr James Strong, Lecturer in British Politics at Queen Mary had an opinion piece published in The Times about the pressure mounting on Theresa May to commit British forces to US-led military action against the Assad regime. He believes she will have to choose among four political options. He writes: “The Prime Minister’s position is difficult. Doing nothing would undermine Britain’s reputation as a reliable military partner. So would losing a parliamentary vote. Bypassing Parliament would mean sacrificing legitimacy and potentially incurring political retribution she can ill afford. She may well decide that the national interest demands action, regardless of the consequences. But she cannot escape political reality, nor ignore recent precedents, without risking significant costs.”
