Professor Tim Bale, Hard Brexit looks inevitable unless there is a large shift in public opinion to stay

5 December 2017

Professor Tim Bale writes for The Times about the slim possibility of avoiding a hard Brexit. He writes: “The only thing that could possibly convince enough Labour and Tory MPs to think again is a major shift in public opinion rooted, firstly, in the belief that the government is incapable of cobbling together a deal with the EU and, secondly, and even more importantly, a serious economic shock. Sadly, if you’re a Remainer or even simply a soft-Brexiteer, such a shift is unlikely to occur anything like soon enough to make any difference.”
