Philip Cowley, professor of politics at QMUL, suggests the polls produced something for almost every party. “Labour had success in London, the Conservatives advanced in Scotland, there was a Liberal Democrat fightback in English local government, the SNP continues to dominate at Holyrood, Ukip broke through in Wales and there was a Plaid Cymru advance. These were always going to be elections where everyone would win prizes, but amid all the claim and counterclaim, it’s worth remembering one key thing: London aside, Labour lost seats in England, Wales and Scotland,” he writes.
