Professor Philip Cowley, Khan is elected mayor amid Tory backlash at Goldsmith

Writing in the Times, Philip Cowley, professor of politics at QMUL, suggests the polls produced something for almost every party. “Labour had success in London, the Conservatives advanced in Scotland, there was a Liberal Democrat fightback in English local government, the SNP continues to dominate at Holyrood, Ukip broke through in Wales and there was a Plaid Cymru advance. These were always going to be elections where everyone would win prizes, but amid all the claim and counterclaim, it’s worth remembering one key thing: London aside, Labour lost seats in England, Wales and Scotland,” he writes.
