Dr Anne Kershen, The Victorian Slum

24 October 2016

BBC Two recreated a Victorian slum in east London and moved a 21st Century family in to show how the Victorian East End changed our attitude to poverty forever. Dr Anne Kershen appeared on the programme to advise the Howarth family, particularly Mandy Howarth, on the background of her family that came to the East End in the late nineteenth century. She also advised the producers on immigrant arrival from Eastern Europe, the structure of the tailoring trade in the nineteenth/early twentieth century and the organisation of tailoring trade unions and strikes in the East End with some material used from her book, Uniting The Tailors. She appears around 28 minutes.
