Student welfare and Support

There are many aspects to student life which may be new to you and your child/ward. Here is some more information on welfare and support services students may find useful.

Guidance and counselling

Our Advice and Counselling Service is here to help your child if they have financial, welfare, legal, emotional or psychological concerns. We provide guidance and advice as well as a range of specialist, professional and confidential services to support students with.

Teaching and learning

All students are assigned a personal tutor from their department who they can discuss academic issues and concerns with.

Finances

University is a big investment in your child’s future, however the rewards are huge. Find out about tuition fees and how we provide millions of pounds in funding through a package of bursaries and scholarships. Our Advice and Counselling service provide a range of specialist, professional and confidential services to support students with financial issues. We have a series of advice guides on topics such as how to plan a budget, the cost of studying in London and additional sources of funding.

International students

With students from over 160 countries, Queen Mary is one of the most internationally diverse institutions in the world. Our staff travel to 55 countries around the world, supporting students to come and study with us. From providing guidance on degree choices, applying for a student visa or adjusting to life in the UK, we will support your child every step of the way.

Disabled students

Around 13% of Queen Mary’s students have a disability, which is higher than average for a Russell Group university. Our specialist Disability and Dyslexia Service offers support for all students with disabilities, specific learning difficulties and mental health issues.

Health

Students who live on or near campus can register with the Student Health Service.

Faith

Queen Mary has a diverse community with students from many different faiths. St Benet’s is our College Chaplaincy, and we also provide multi-faith prayer rooms with washing facilities. There are many other places of worship near the Mile End campus – from churches, mosques and synagogues to temples and a Buddhist prayer centre.

Careers

Our Careers & Enterprise team will help your young person get the edge they need in today’s competitive job market. We provide workshops, careers’ appointments and information to help your child work out what they want to do after university, and to apply effectively for work experience and graduate jobs. Whatever their background or experience, they will have the opportunity to meet employers from across the city at our events and gain invaluable skills through our award-winning work experience programmes. We can even help our students start or grow their own businesses or social enterprises.
