2021 NEXTEUK PhD Virtual Summer School (5-9 July)

What is the 2021 NEXTEUK PhD Summer School about?

The 2021 edition of the NEXTEUK PhD Summer School, organised in partnership with the Jean Monnet Centre of Montreal, will focus on "Researching post-Brexit and (post-) Covid EU-UK Relations: What impact on Policies, Methods and Theories?".  The UK withdrawal from the European Union (EU) is potentially opening an era of changes with strong implications for EU and British policies, but also for theories and methods that can be used to study them. The virtual Summer School will focus on the areas of the NEXTEUK research project: (i) historical achievements of the EU-UK relationship (ii) successes and challenges of the EU-UK relationship (iii) the future of the EU-UK relationship (iv) the impact on the British and the EU policies, polities and politics.

What to expect from the NEXTEUK PhD Virtual Summer School?

The NEXTEUK Virtual PhD Summer School, organised in partnership with the Jean Monnet Centre of Montreal, is planned from July 5th to 9th. The collective and synchronous sessions will be scheduled during 4 afternoons during which participants will benefit from an interactive learning experience based on:

  • Live lectures and debate sessions with leading scholars and key policy-makers (e.g.“Brexit from an international relations perspective”, “The decision-making of Brexit”, “What is next for the EU”, “The future of the UK”). Confirmed speakers are Brigid Laffan,  Director and Professor at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and Director of the Global Governance Programme at the European University Institute (EUI), Florence; Frédéric Mérand, Professor and Director of the Centre d'études et de recherches internationales at the Montreal University; Philip Rycroft, former Permanent Secretary of the Department for Exiting the EU. 
  • Individual presentations and collective discussions on participants' research project
  • One-to-one sessions with leading scholars
  • Skills training sessions
  • Group exchanges and discussions on the collective working paper to be produced by the participants to the Summer School

 

4 independent study mornings are also planned during which participants will be expected to:

  • Watch the pre-recorded lectures. Confirmed lecturers are among others Laurie Beaudonnet, Professor and Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Montreal; Javier Sajuria, senior lecturer in politics at QMUL; Elvire Fabry, Senior Research Fellow at Institut Jacques Delors; Agnès Alexandre-Collier, Professor at Université de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté
  • Read the learning material provided by the teaching team
  • Read the research projects of the other participants to the Summer School
  • Prepare the collective working paper to which all the participants to the Summer School will contribute 

 

Why should you apply? 

The NEXTEUK PhD Virtual Summer School offers a free of charges, intensive, multidisciplinary (political science, international relations, law, business and management etc.) and participatory programme at an advanced academic level, in which PhD students and early career researchers interested in the Brexit process and the EU-UK relationship will be provided a stimulating environment for intellectual exchange and academic training. Participants will:

  • Engage with key policymakers and leading international scholars to gain expertise on a diversity of content such as the history of the EU-UK relationship, the negociating process of Brexit, the transformations of EU and UK policies etc.
  • Learn and discuss about the variety of theorical and methodological tools that can be used to understand the EU-UK relationship
  • Benefit from a benevolent environment to present their own research and receive individual and collective feedback from scholars and fellow students
  • Acquire and deepen academic skills among others how to write, present and publish a research paper, how to write their thesis, how to disseminate their research, how to discuss a research paper, how to write a collective research paper
  • Have the opportunity to participate to a collective working paper and to publish an individual working paper or blog on the NEXTEUK website
  • Become part of an unique and long-lasting multicultural and multidisciplinary network of young scholars and senior researchers interested in the same topics 

 

Who can apply?

The Summer School is mainly designed for PhD students and early career researchers in the field of EU studies and more specifically dealing with EU-UK relations and European integration. The 20 successful applicants will demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • Master’s degree and research interest in the field of European integration and EU-UK relations
  • Good working knowledge of English
  • Availability throughout the entire programme

 

How to apply?

Interested PhD students and early career researchers can apply until April, 30th, 23.59 on https://qmul.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/application-for-the-nexteuk-summer-school. A presentation of the research proposal and motivation is expected.
