New Students

What documents do I need to enrol online?

When you are completing your Online Enrolment you will need to provide us with some documents.

The page provides guidance on the following:

Evidence of identity and nationality - British and Irish Citizens

If you are a British or Irish Citizen, you must upload one of the following valid documents:

  • The biographical details page from your passport; or
  • the front and back of your Irish passport card.

OR any of the following documents, when accompanied with additional photographic identification:

  • Full UK birth certificate, which must include your names and the names of at least one of your parents
  • Full UK adoption certificate, which must include your names and the names of at least one of your parents
  • Certificate of naturalisation as a British Citizen
  • A birth or adoption certificate issued in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Ireland.

Acceptable forms of photographic identification for use in combination with the above certificates include a provisional or full photocard driving licence issued by an EU country, an Armed Forces Identity card or a proof of age card with the PASS logo.

If you do not have any photographic identification, please contact the Student Enquiry Centre as soon as possible for advice.

This guidance is very important as the university may not be able to fully enrol you if you do not present us with a form of identification as outlined above.

Evidence of identity and nationality - Other British nationals

If you are a British overseas territories citizen, a British overseas citizen, a British subject, a British national (overseas) or a British protected person, you do not normally have an automatic right to live or work in the UK.

When you enrol online, you will need to provide:

  • The biographical details page from your passport

After you arrive in the UK, our Immigration Compliance Team will contact you and ask you to provide evidence that you have immigration permission or a status that permits you to study your programme at QMUL. If you are unable to provide evidence that you have immigration permission or a status that permits you to study your programme at QMUL, you will be de-registered.

For examples of the documents you will need to show in specific circumstances please see the international students section of our website.

Evidence of identity and nationality - EEA (not including Republic of Ireland) and Swiss nationals

The UK left the European Union on 31 January 2020. EEA and Swiss national students arriving in the UK on or before 31 December 2020 may be able to apply to stay in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme.  Read more about the EU Settlement Scheme and find out how to apply on the QMUL Advice and Counselling Service website. Students arriving on or after 01 January 2021 will have to apply for immigration permission. Read more about Queen Mary and Brexit.

If you are a European Economic Area (not including Republic of Ireland) or Swiss national, you must upload one of the following valid documents:

  • The biographical details page from your passport; or
  • The front and back of your European National identity card

We do not know what immigration documents (if any) universities will be required to retain for EEA (not including Republic of Ireland) and Swiss national students entering on or after 01 January 2021. If we are required to retain copies of your immigration documents, our Immigration Compliance Team will write to you shortly after you have arrived in the UK to request these documents. We, therefore, recommend that you keep copies of any UK immigration stickers, stamps and cards (both sides) and proof of dates of travel into and out of the UK, such as boarding passes, tickets and booking confirmations.

Evidence of identity and nationality (Non EEA or Swiss nationals)

If you are not an EEA or Swiss national, you will need to provide:

  • valid passport; or
  • valid travel document; or
  • application registration document (both sides)

Evidence of your immigration permission or status

The following does not apply to:

  • British and Irish Citizens
  • European Economic Area nationals who arrive in the UK before 31 December 2020

After you arrive in the UK, our Immigration Compliance Team will contact you and ask you to provide evidence that you have immigration permission or a status that permits you to study your programme at QMUL. If you are unable to provide evidence that you have immigration permission or a status that permits you to study your programme at QMUL, you will be de-registered.

For examples of the documents you will need to show in specific circumstances please see the international students section of our website.

IMPORTANT: If you are already in the UK and are not confident that your current immigration status allows you to study at Queen Mary, please send evidence of your immigration permission (usually a sticker or stamp in your passport or a residence card) and the details page from your passport to visaverification@qmul.ac.uk as soon as possible. If you are sending us a copy of your residence card, please send us copies of the front and back of your card.

Additional requirements – Medical and Dental students only

Some medical and dental students are required to have obtained health, DBS and/or EPP clearance in order to be fully enrolled onto the programme. More information about these checks can be found below.

Health Questionnaire and Health Clearance

All undergraduate and some taught postgraduate* medical and dental students are required to complete an occupational health questionnaire and have health clearance to start the programme. An email explaining the clearance requirements and the health questionnaire will be sent to you by the Admissions Office. Please follow the instructions in the email and return the questionnaire as early as possible.

If you have not received the questionnaire, please contact the relevant Admissions Office:

*DClinDent Orthodontics, DClinDent Periodontology, DClinDent Prosthodontics, DClinDent Paediatric Dentistry, DClinDent Oral Medicine.

This guidance is very important as the university may NOT be able to fully enrol you if you have NOT returned your questionnaire to the Occupational Health Service and obtained health clearance.

DBS Check

All undergraduate medical and dental students need to complete a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check in order to start the programme. An email asking you to log into the DBS system to commence your check will be sent to you by the Admissions Office. Please follow the guidance in the email carefully. Students who have not yet received police clearance through the DBS will be required to complete a waiver as part of Online Enrolment, confirming that they have applied for clearance and that they have already declared any criminal convictions.

If you have not received the email with your login details, please contact the Admissions Office via smdadmissions@qmul.ac.uk

EPP Clearance

All dental students are required to have satisfactory blood test results to show that you are not infected with hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) before admission to the programme. The Department of Health guidance requires that these blood tests to clear you for exposure prone procedures (EPP) are performed under strictly controlled circumstances. You will receive an email from the Admissions Office with guidance of what to do in order to complete this EPP clearance process.

If you did not receive this email or have any questions about your EPP clearance, please contact the relevant Admissions Office:
