Profile

Alan is a Teaching Associate within the School of Politics and International Relations and contributes to the Mile End Institute's work. After graduating with a PhD from Queen Mary University of London in 2017, he spent five years at the academic think tank, UK in a Changing Europe, as well as lecturing on British, European, and comparative politics at King's College London and the London School of Economics and Political Science. He was previously a by-fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge. 

Alan's research focuses on the past and future of the British party system, party system change in comparative perspective, and the continuing political and policy implications of Brexit. Alan was previously part of the prestigious Nuffield British General Election project on the 2019 general election, and will soon be publishing his first monograph, Cross-Party Politics in Post-War Britain, with Oxford University Press.

He has been published in journals such as Political Studies, Political Quarterly, Regional Studies, the British Journal of Politics and International Relations, Territory, Politics, Governance, British Politics, Commonwealth and Comparative Studies and the Journal of European Integration. He has also contributed op-eds for The Guardian, The Times Red Box, New Statesman, Washington Post, the Daily Telegraph, UnHerd, Foreign Affairs, Tortoise and The Spectator. He comments regularly on British politics in the media and has given interviews on BBC News, Sky News, ITV News, Bloomberg, LBC, Radio 4, Talkradio, BBC Radio 5 Live, the BBC World Service, RTE, Novara Media, EuroNews, and Al Jazeera.
