Keir Starmer's Leadership: One Year On

10 May 2021

Time: 7:00 - 8:30pm

This event brought together an expert panel to discuss Keir Starmer’s first year as Leader of the Opposition in the aftermath of major elections in Scotland, Wales, and other parts of the UK.

The session commenced with a presentation by Anthony Wells, Director of Political and Social Research (YouGov), who gave an insight into what the polls have said about Labour’s performance over the past year and the present and future challenges facing the Labour leadership.

The panel then addressed how it believes the party is progressing, if at all, under Starmer. They discussed whether voters can be persuaded to return to Labour after a heavy defeat in the General Election of 2019 and how well is Labour performing in the so-called ‘Red Wall’ seats in the north of England. They also examined how effective has the party been in exposing the perceived weaknesses of the Government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Panel:

Caroline Flint - Member of Parliament for Don Valley, 1997-2019.

Eunice Goes - Professor of Politics at Richmond University, The American University in London.

Ailbhe Rea - Political Correspondent at the New Statesman and the co-host of the New Statesman podcast.

Robert Saunders - Reader in Modern British History at Queen Mary University of London.

Anthony Wells - Director of Political and Social Research, YouGov.

Chair:

Patrick Diamond - Senior Lecturer in Public Policy in the School of Politics and International Relations and Director of the Mile End Institute at Queen Mary University of London.
