The past two years have shown us that online learning is here to stay, and as the demand for distance learning continues to grow, Queen Mary has taken steps to meet learners where they are. The School of Mathematical Sciences is excited to be spearheading this initiative and making our world-class degree programmes accessible to a wider audience. The MSc Applied Data Analytics will be Queen Mary’s first degree programme taught entirely through Coursera’s global online learning platform.

Why Data Analysis?

In 2006, British mathematician and entrepreneur, Clive Humby, claimed that “data is the new oil” and this analogy was based on the idea that data held huge potential – just like crude oil – but unrefined, it wasn’t much use to anyone.

Shortly after this, we witnessed the explosion of data and the birth of the so-called data economy. The demand for data analysts began to soar as organisations and businesses sought skilled professionals who knew how to clean, analyse, visualise and draw conclusions from data that could be used to inform their decisions and processes.

Healthcare practitioners rely on data to make well-informed decisions about the diagnoses and treatment of their patients, while financial institutions use data to analyse the risk of trading stocks and shares.
