SMS to spearhead Queen Mary’s distance learning partnership with Coursera
As the demand for flexible distance learning increases, Queen Mary has partnered with Coursera to deliver the MSc Applied Data Analytics.
The past two years have shown us that online learning is here to stay, and as the demand for distance learning continues to grow, Queen Mary has taken steps to meet learners where they are. The School of Mathematical Sciences is excited to be spearheading this initiative and making our world-class degree programmes accessible to a wider audience. With the first cohort starting in September, the MSc Applied Data Analytics will be Queen Mary’s first degree programme taught entirely through Coursera’s global online learning platform.
Why Data Analysis?
In 2006, British mathematician and entrepreneur, Clive Humby, claimed that “data is the new oil” and this analogy was based on the idea that data held huge potential – just like crude oil – but unrefined, it wasn’t much use to anyone.
Shortly after this, we witnessed the explosion of data and the birth of the so-called data economy. The demand for data analysts began to soar as organisations and businesses sought skilled professionals who knew how to clean, analyse, visualise and draw conclusions from data that could be used to inform their decisions and processes.
Data Scientists are in huge demand right now with millions of new jobs being created every year. Healthcare practitioners rely on data to make well-informed decisions about the diagnoses and treatment of their patients, while financial institutions use data to analyse the risk of trading stocks and shares.
Coursera are industry leaders in delivering online education. They partner with more than 250 leading universities and companies to bring flexible, affordable, job-relevant online learning to individuals and organisations worldwide.
Earlier this year, President and Principal of Queen Mary, Professor Colin Bailey said: “We are proud to be launching this distance learning programme with Coursera in line with our commitment to deliver an outstanding, world-class education and student experience. It is core to our vision to address the needs of today’s changing global workforce through innovative practices that open the doors of opportunity to learners from around the world".
Statistics and Data Science have long been a focus of teaching and research in the School of Mathematical Sciences and we have a highly skilled and experienced academic team working in these fields. Our campus-based MSc Data Analytics is now our School’s most popular Master’s programme and we wanted to build upon this success, offering people around the world the opportunity to earn a Queen Mary qualification from the comfort of their own homes.
The MSc Applied Data Analytics is a two year programme and learners should expect a study commitment of approximately 18 hours per week. The lectures and tutorials will be delivered live online and the recordings will also be made available on-demand for those that were unable to join the session or just want to revisit the content. This flexible approach to learning will allow students to fit the Master’s around their busy lives with many continuing to work full time.
