Sonya Kovalevsky (link is external) was the first major Russian female mathematician and the first woman appointed to a full professorship in Nothern Europe. She lived in the 19th-Century and was responsible for some important original contributions to her field.
For twenty years, Sonya Kovalevsky days have been held in the United States to encourage and inspire girls into the study of mathematics and we are proud to have hosted the first event of its kind at Queen Mary University of London in 2017.
Similar future events will be aimed at Year 12 girls and will give students a flavour of what studying mathematics at university is really like. Students will also find out more about career opportunities for mathematics graduates and hear from inspirational female speakers about their own experiences.
