Accommodation for Years 2 to 5

QMUL Malta does not guarantee accommodation for students in their second year onwards. Our students have found that after staying in Gozo for their first year they are in a good position to find accommodation that suits their needs - many have made new friends and choose to share an apartment or Villa together.

Choosing private accommodation in Malta

As an island with a flourishing service industry, Gozo offers a plethora of accommodation options to suit every budget. From a quaint studio apartment in the capital; to a villa in the countryside shared with a few friends, the options are plenty.

Where should I live?

Gozo is a small island but quite hilly. This means walking or cycling can get challenging at times. The QMUL campus is based in Victoria, Gozo’s main town. For accommodation within walking distance of the University, Victoria is a most ideal option.

Gozo’s bus system connects all towns and villages to Victoria. The larger towns of Nadur and Xaghra offer plenty of accommodation options. For a quieter and more rustic setting, the villages of Għarb and Għasri are two splendid options.

Rental properties in Gozo are reasonably priced.

What should I consider when booking own accommodation?

A real estate agency will facilitate the process of reserving your long-let property. It is also a safer and more secure option over direct-from-owner letting.

Monthly rental prices are determined by the type of property, its size, and location. Before embarking on your search, determine the following:

  • Your budget
  • The area you prefer, taking into consideration transport mode
  • Facilities required
  • Number of persons
  • Length of your stay

The process of renting a property in Malta is quite straightforward. Your letting consultant will help you negotiate a price with the landlord and clarify the terms and conditions of your rental contract. Together with the landlord, you will go over the payment terms and determine when payments will be due. It’s common practice to be requested one month’s rent in advance once the lease is signed. You will also need to pay a deposit, equating to one month’s rent. As long as the property was well-kept, the deposit is refunded upon termination of the lease.

Utilities should also be taken into consideration. Some landlords include water and electricity costs in your monthly rent, others provide you with the bill when issued.

Rental agency fees are equal to half a month’s rent, plus vat, paid by both the tenant and landlord.

In January 2020, new rental regulations granting additional rights to tenants came into force. Amongst the new provisions is one that makes it much harder for a landlord to retain the deposit.
