Professor Bill Spence is the Interim Director of the Life Sciences Institute. Bill is responsible as VP (Research) for oversight of QMUL's research activities, seeking to ensure the best environment for fostering outstanding research, recruiting and supporting the best researchers, and maintaining strategic direction and vision in ever-changing external conditions. Bill is the Interim Director of the Life Sciences Institute and a member of the Life Sciences Strategy Group. He oversees the coordination of QMUL's overall development of this major cross-disciplinary and potentially multi-partner Institute. His research interests are in theoretical physics, in the structures underlying quantum field theory and gravity, most recently studying new ways to formulate particle scattering, such as at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The successful “Big Data” programmes in particle physics and astronomy are expected to provide significant insights and new ideas for tackling some key problems within life sciences, particularly around the analysis of large-scale genomics data. Centre for Research in String Theory has further details about Bill’s work.
