2019 Image Awards Winners

The Life Sciences Institute is delighted to announce the winners of the 2019 Life Sciences Image Awards.

Our judging panel were impressed by the breadth, beauty and quality of the images submitted to this year’s competition. The images were exhibited in the Neuron Pod at our exhibition and prize-giving event in June.

Beauty in Medicine theme winner: ‘Cosmic Brainstorm’ by Maria Ramos

Health and Wellbeing theme winner ‘The missing element’ by Vladislav Skovorodov

Health and Technology theme winner ‘AI finds beauty in a broken heart’ by Nay Aung


The People’s Choice winner (voted by over 300 members of public at the Festival of Communities and the Barts and Queen Mary Science Festival) was ‘Beyond Blue’ by Tamara Pemovska.

Congratulations to all the prize-winners! Paul received an iPad Air and Apple pencil and the theme and People’s Choice winners each received a £50 amazon voucher.


We would like to thank this years judging panel: Sabrina Taner (Wellcome Images), Councillor Sabina Akhtar (Tower Halmets Councillor for Arts, Culture and Brexit) and Victoria Adrienne (Life Sciences Institute Director of Administration). We were deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of Professor Peter McOwan. Peter chaired the Image Award Judging Panel since its inception in 2017, and we hugely appreciate his contributions to the Image Awards and to wider QMUL.
