Queen Mary Research Online - Growth and Focus of our Open Access Repository

Published on:

Queen Mary Research Online is the online open access repository belonging to Queen Mary, University of London. QMRO is managed and maintained by the Repository and Research Information team based in Library Services. QMRO provides a vital outlet for research outputs at QMUL, and serves an irreplaceable role in facilitating our researchers’ fulfilment of the open access expectations for the post-2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise.

QMRO also ensures we can meet the open access expectations of the RCUK, Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and many other research funders. In response to this widening adoption of open access mandates by funders, the Repository and Research Information team have seen an increase in the number of approved deposits in QMRO from 189 for the entirety of 2013, to over 3000 in 2016.

In September 2015, we celebrated our 2000th entry in QMRO, we now host over 5000 items. That’s an increase of 150% in the last 12 months! This chart offers a snapshot of some of the types of items we hold.

Research papers and other outputs that are available as open access have a much greater potential audience, and therefore a greater chance of making an impact on the research landscape. Using QMRO, we can track the increase of reader traffic accessing items. For example, QMRO has seen a huge increase in the number of page views - from 958 in 2011 to 328,277 in 2015.
