Open Access and support for paying article processing charges

The Repository and Research Information team is responsible for administering the block grants awarded to the University by research funders as a means to support their open access publishing policies, by paying for the article processing charges (APCs).

We are currently in year four of a five year funding agreement from the RCUK and have just entered a new three year funding agreement in the form of the Charities Open Access Fund (COAF).
Also in 2016 we have a new institutional fund to support authors wishing to make their research open access on publication where there are no other funds available.

Applying for funding to pay the APC is easy, all you need to do is fill in our Open Access Funding Claim Form found here and send it to us. We check the details of your paper against the research funder’s criteria and get back to you regarding support for the open access fees.



The team has been administering payment of APCs since 2013 and have seen a steady increase in the number of Queen Mary authors and researchers making use of these funds.



We have also seen a rise in the costs of publishing open access, although more and more publishers are looking for alternative funding models to avoid the practice of ‘double dipping’ over subscription and open access costs.



As part of the administration of the funds to support payment of APCs we are required to report back to funders on how it is spent. We also keep additional data on the schools and institutes applying for funding support. Here we have the results of the top ten schools/institutes making use of the funds since 2013.
