Upcoming service changes to Mile End Library

Beginning on Saturday 03 June, the next phase of work to transform Mile End Library will begin.  There will be closures to study spaces and collections during this time, with revised routes to move through the building and a fetching service in operation.  Clear signage will be provided, alongside ongoing updates on progress with the work.

Additional information and updates will appear over the summer.

Update

From Saturday 03 June - Sunday 11 June, access will be to the ground floor only whilst the builders prepare areas and put up internal scaffolding. Collections will remain available on request via the Book Collection Service form. After that, some areas will remain closed for refurbishment.

Third and Fourth floors

These floors will be closed from Saturday 03 June until September to complete the renovations in this space. This includes increasing the capacity on both floors to over 450 and installing the glass lightwell for more natural light. 

Second floor

Second floor north will be open as usual from Monday 12 June - Sunday 30 July. 

As part soundproofing works on the stairwell, the Second floor landing may be inaccessible from Monday 31 July for 3 weeks. Alternative routes will be on operation for access to the Second floor during this period as detailed below. 

First Floor

The north and south reading rooms will be closed from Saturday 03 June for refurbishment with new energy efficient lighting and carpeting to provide a nicer, brighter and warming study environment.

A book collection service will be in operation for resources held on the this floor. Please complete the Mile End Library First Floor Book Collection Service form to request a book. You will be notified when the book is ready for collection. 

The west room will remain open however there will be refurbishment to some of the space by the group study rooms 9 and 10 which will reduce capacity. These works are due to start in July. The PC hub and group study room 11 will remain open as normal. 

As part soundproofing works on the stairwell, the First floor landing may be inaccessible. Alternate routes will be on operation for access to the First floor during this period as detailed below.

Ground floor

The toilets opposite the contemplation room will be out of order from 05 June. 

Stairwell

The stairwell connecting the ground, first and second floors will be improved with greater soundproofing from Monday 05 June. 

While works on the stairwell are carried out, access may be restricted or alternative routes will be in place to access the First and Second floors. The alternative route will be via a stairwell accessed through the Teaching Collection on the Ground floor. 

Gender neural toilets

A door will be installed on the gender neural toilets and access may be limited when works on the stairwell are ongoing.
