Queen Mary offers all of its students the opportunity to learn a language

LEARN A LANGUAGE

Make the most of your time at university and optimise your skills profile: learn a new language or continue learning a language that you already know. a picture of a section of a globe

There’s so much more that university can offer apart from courses in your immediate subject area. And there’s no better time to expand your horizon than while you’re at university, with courses in eight world languages at your fingertips, taught on the Mile End campus, and open to all Queen Mary students.

Why learn a language?

Learning a new language, and learning about the cultures and societies where the language is spoken, gives you a new outlook on the world. More and more companies look for multilingual employees. A CBI (Confederation of British Industries) report (2019) found that foreign language skills and cultural understanding would be ‘vital’ for ‘Global Britain’. Speaking another language enhances your ability to work overseas. When learning another language, you develop at the same time other skills such as intercultural awareness, communication, confidence and teamwork, which are very attractive to employers.

We offer courses in:

  • Modern Arabic
  • Bengali
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Mandarin Chinese
  • Spanish
  • Catalan

You can study modules at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

Meet some of our teachers and learn some interesting facts about the languages they teach:

Taking a language module is a great way to meet Queen Mary students from across the university, from outside your subject area, so it widens your social network. And since language classes are taught in small groups and are very interactive, you do really get to know your fellow students.

Listen to Justyna Aneta Stuchlik, an MA student, telling her teacher, Silvia Lodi, about her experience of learning French at Queen Mary:

Who are the modules for?

The modules are open to all Queen Mary students (and staff), from any School, and are timetabled so you can combine them with your main subjects. You can take a language module for credit (ask your Academic Adviser if you can take a language elective as part of your programme) or alongside your degree, as an extracurricular activity.

How do I sign up?

If you take a module for credit (so that it counts towards your degree), you use the same registration process as for your other elective modules.

If you take a module as extracurricular, not for credit (it doesn’t count towards your degree), you sign up by completing the registration form on the website.

Will I get a certificate?

Modules taken for credit show on your transcript. If you take the module as extracurricular activity, you will get a certificate, provided you meet the attendance and progression requirements.

Is it free?

Language modules for credit are free. If you study a language in addition to your degree, your School or Institute may agree to fund your language learning, or students may be asked to pay a moderate fee.
