Here are a few memories of festive celebrations at Queen Mary from the Ghost of Christmas Past...
28th December 1925 a Children’s Fancy Dress Ball was held at the People’s Palace. Prizes were awarded for dancing the waltz and the foxtrot, and for the best fancy dress costume. A ‘Special Committee’ judged the competitors and cautioned them that their decisions were final.
Charter Week celebrations 15-20th December 1947 included a ball, ‘crazy film show’, variety concert and ‘end of term sing-song’. The subject of the Charter Debate was “that the influence of women in British public life has increased, is increasing…and should be diminished”. Charter Week celebrated the presentation of the
Queen Mary College Charter on 12 December 1934.
Whilst in December 1982 Eurythmics entertained students in the Great Hall, Santa Clause was denounced in CUB as the “unacceptable face of capitalism”, highlighting his unfair treatment of elf workers, who suffered poor wages, seasonal work and sweat-shop conditions.
