Canon Fleming raised the question of religion at the first meeting to discuss the possible formation of a ladies college:
“As to the need of a College for Ladies, with all the high educational advantages of Girton and Newham and others, but founded on a Scriptural basis, and conducted on distinctly religious principles, Was there room for such?”
