The Caroline Skeel Archives Reading Room

On May 10th 1872, Constance wrote in her Green Book Diary that her parents had consented to her going to ‘the college in Hitchin’ for a year. She actually stayed for three years, becoming the first women to sit the Moral Science’s Tripos at Cambridge University.

In this entry, Constance reflects upon her hopes and fears of entering college life. As with many events in her life, she looked to her unfaltering faith to help her decide the route to take: “…& it must be right to educate & use any powers God has given me to the very best I can”.
