Evening classes were available to men and women in a variety of subjects. A strong emphasis was placed on electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry and other scientific subjects, as these provided practical knowledge for tradesmen.

But other classes were offered including art, literature, languages, history, geography, photography, plumbing, dressmaking, cookery, and elocution.

Classes proved very popular and between 1889 and 1890 77,143 reportedly attended evening classes.
