The College developed out of the People's Palace Technical Schools, and later became known as East London College, Queen Mary College and following the merger with Westfield in 1989, Queen Mary and Westfield College.

The student body of the College has expanded dramatically to now total 16,000. Between 1907 and 1910, 91 students took degrees at East London Technical College. By 1985, 3500 students were enrolled at Queen Mary College.
