The Caroline Skeel Archives Reading Room

Black and white photograph of the Peoples Palace building from about 1890. A clock tower can be seen in the foreground.

The People’s Palace was a philanthropic endeavour to provide culture and entertainment to the people of East London.

The original People’s Palace was entirely based in what is now the Queens’ Building. It included a large concert hall called the Queens Hall, a library (now known as The Octagon), Winter Garden, swimming pool, gymnasium, gardens and tennis courts.

See more examples from the collection in the People’s Palace Gallery or to read contemporary accounts see the digitised Palace Journal.
