Queen Mary Events 

Wednesday February 3rd

Event: LGBTQA+ History Month: Staff Yoga Taster @ QMotion

A practice tied together through the conscious connection of breath and movement that helps generate a balance of strength and flexibility, lightness and heaviness, movement and stillness. In this class, we will consciously place the body-breath-mind in the constant flow of time while exploring different postures through fun and playful sequences.

Time: 12:15-13:00 

 

Wednesday 3rd February 

Event: LGBTQA+ History Month - A Taste of Mindfulness

The Chaplaincy is offering a Mindfulness session led by Bob Chase from Mindful in the City to mark LGBTQA+ History Month. This session will introduce the key concepts of Mindfulness and offers the opportunity to participate in some guided Mindfulness practices. It’s suitable for newbies and anyone who already practises. Links to resources, including LGBTQ-specific resources, will be made available following the session.

Thursday 4th February 

Event: Finding an LGBTQ+ Friendly Employer 

Join this panel conversation and Q&A hosted by individuals with lived experience of entering the workplace as an LGBTQ+ person. Come prepared with questions, ready to take away valuable advice and join the community.  

If staff would like to attend, they will need to contact careers-events@qmul.ac.uk and we can share the link. Students can register using the link in the title.

Tuesday Feburary 9th 

Event: LGBTQA+ History Month: Staff Pilates Taster @ QMotion

The Pilates session is a full body workout suitable for all levels and abilities. We will start standing, mobilising the body adding in some balance work and breathing technique. We then work our way into the mat-work where we perform various exercises and stretches that target all the major muscle groups, always applying the main Pilates principles (Breathing, concentration, control, centering, precision and flow).

Wednesday 10th February 

Event: INSTA TAKEOVER ALERT - Alumnus Dr Anthony James (Medicne MBBS, 2014)

Alumnus Dr Antony James will be taking over our Instagram as part of our LGBTQA+ History Month celebrations. 

Anthony is a London-based GP, former Chair - Associate in Training Community for the Royal College of General Practitioners, and Director of Corporate Strategy for PinkNews, the world’s most read and watched LGBTQA+ digital media publisher which aims to “inform, inspire change and empower people to be themselves”.

During the takeover, Anthony will reflect on the LGBTQA+ community and his personal experiences of belonging to the community, what LGBTQA+ History Month means to him, his time and studies at Barts and The London, and his career. Tune in!

Monday 15th February 

Event: Finding LGBTQ+ related material in the Queen Mary Library Collections 

In this session you will be able to explore the fantastic world of LGBTQ+ material available at Queen Mary Libraries. You will find out more about our monthly book displays, how to effectively find related literature, and other resources that are available to support your work and studies. We will also co-create communal LGBTQ+ reading/playlists.

Event: LGBTQA+ Parenting Discussion

If you are an LGBTQA+ parent or thinking of becoming a parent, please join us. If you are a child raised by LGBTQ+ parents, we would love to hear from you too. We will have invited speaker who will update us on the changes in the UK regulations to support LGBTQA+ parenting. You will be hearing from two LGBTQA+ parents with very different experiences.

Monday February 22nd 

Event: LGBTQA+ In Nature

A common allegation is that being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or asexual are "unnatural" and confined to humans.  This informal, public lecture, which has been designed for all (it assumes no science / biology background) will challenge the myth of "unnatural" behaviours and emotions by exploring several examples of LGBTQA+ in a broad range of species from water fleas and stick insects through tropical fish to albatrosses, walruses and sheep. 

This informal lecture will be aimed for between 40 and 50 minutes, with up to 30 minutes of discussion in which questions from the audience would be very much appreciated and welcomed.

Tuesday February 23rd 

Event: LGBTQA+ Mental Health: In conversation with ELOP, Advice and Counselling and Queen Mary Students Union

Join us at our event with East London Out Project, Queen Mary Advice and Counselling and Queen Mary Students Union where we will hear from speakers Liz Sacre, Jo Gate-Eastley and Jack Juckes exploring the historical mental health support for LGBTQA+ people, how LGBTQA mental health may have been impacted by Covid-19, how LGBTQA+ staff and students can access mental health support internally at Queen Mary, in the local area and more widely. The event will be centered around the themes of identity, isolation, bullying and harassment, community and accessing support.

The speakers will explore the themes, discuss their experience of working with LGBTQA+ people and their mental health and explore ways in which people can come together to look after and support each other and how we can look after our wellbeing. As well as introducing you to some excellent support and resources that are available.

Thursday 25th February 

Event: Alumni Angles: In conversation with Jane Hill

BBC newsreader and alumna, Jane Hill (Politics BA, 1991) will be speaking to Professor Rainbow Murray from the School of Politics and International Relations. Jane has enjoyed a longstanding career in broadcasting and is one of the BBC's main news presenters. Outside of work, Jane was named in the 2020 Visible Lesbian 100 list and is deeply committed to equality, diversity and inclusion: she is involved with a number of charities and organisations that highlight the value of inclusion and role modelling and has mentored young journalists.

Monday 1st February

Event: Panel Discussion w/ Bishopsgate Institute LGBTQ+ Archives and Switchboard, the LGBT+ Helpline.

This will be a live panel and Q&A to launch History Month, hosted on Zoom.

Wednesday 10th February

Event: Join Queer Britain and the producers of the Log Books podcast to hear more about the LGBT+ history from 1974 as seen in the calls to Switchboard and the memories of the people interviewed for The Log Books.
