ELSA at Queen Mary University of London
ELSA QMUL is the first local ELSA group established in London.
ELSA (The European Law Students’ Association) is the world’s largest law students’ association; it is comprised of more than 41,000 members across the globe including students and recent graduates who are interested in academic and personal excellence in addition to their studies at their universities.
They provide members with opportunities to enhance their legal knowledge on a variety of law-related topics.
What type of events do you organise?
Some of the events we organised this year included: Careers at the EU, Freedom of Expression and the Internet, Securitization and the Financial Crisis, Privacy and Security after the War on Terrorism as well as panel discussions on the topics of Is an LLM Worth Doing?, A UK Bill of Rights, is it the right thing? and many more.
What opportunities do you offer your members?
Being a member of ELSA QMUL gives students access to the various global opportunities provided by ELSA, some of these are mentioned below, but there are so many it’s impossible to list them all!
The Student Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP) is a paid work experience programme ranging from two-weeks to two-years in any law related area. STEP makes it possible for law students and young lawyers to gain working experience abroad.
There are also ELSA delegates who are given the opportunity to sit next to national delegates and representatives of some of the most important NGOs and observe how decisions and policies are created at international level, deepening participants’ knowledge the issues discussed.
Study Visits provide ELSA members with a possibility to visit ELSA groups in other countries and in return host groups at our university.
As part of ELSA QMUL, our members can participate in law schools which ELSA International organises all over Europe. Each of the law schools is based on a different topic and based in different cities. They include a great academic program as well as an excellent social program. Besides the European law schools, ELSA provides the opportunity to visit those in China and in Dubai.
