What influenced your decision to study at Queen Mary?

At first, the modules such as Charterparties, Wet Shipping Law, and Marine Insurance Law led me to choose the LLM in International Shipping Law at QMUL. I believed that these modules would complement my previous legal experience in Indonesia, handling shipping cases and I thought they would also be necessary for me to pursue a career as a shipping lawyer in Indonesia. After three months of study at QMUL, I was convinced that the world-class faculty, academic staff, and guest lecturers made it the right choice for me to pursue my master's degree at QMUL. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK Government, which enabled me to pursue my dream of studying shipping law at QMUL.

How did you find the teaching and learning?

I'm overjoyed to have the opportunity to observe teaching and learning at QMUL. The professors provided the highest possible quality of teaching for students, both in-person and online, which is simple to understand and interactive. I met classmates from a variety of countries and backgrounds, which broadened my perspective on the shipping industry's practice in various jurisdictions. As well as being taught by experienced professors, another appealing aspect of teaching and learning at QMUL is the guest lectures invited by the professors. They are experienced shipping professionals who broadened my perspective on the industry from both a theoretical and practical standpoint. It also provided me with an opportunity to discuss shipping cases that occurred in Indonesian territorial waters; surprisingly, they were also aware of several high-profile cases in Indonesia.

What was key about your programme/ were there any highlights?

That would be the modules and professors. For me personally, the modules provided by QMUL cover all significant aspects of the shipping industry and discuss them in greater detail from an international perspective—something I had never learned in Indonesia previously. The professors are friendly, interactive, and helpful, and I am happy to discuss shipping legal issues with them.

Did you combine modules across specialisations, where available, and if so, what were the advantages of this?

As of now, I have not combined modules from different specialisations; instead, I have concentrated exclusively on shipping modules. However, I would like to attend the international arbitration seminar in order to gain a better understanding of the practise, as I aspire to handle maritime arbitration cases in the future when I return to Indonesia.

What piece of insight or advice would you offer for future students?

Conduct research into the areas of specialisation that is critical for your future professional career, push yourself to learn something new, and savour every moment of your studies.

Has gaining a deeper understanding of your specialisation helped your career?

I believe that one day, upon returning to Indonesia, I will be able to comprehend both theoretical and practical aspects of shipping. Having an LLM in International Shipping Law will benefit not only my career, but also the development of shipping law in Indonesia, as I will work closely with shipping practitioners from both the private and public sectors on a regular basis.

What was your best experience of studying at Queen Mary?

I would say that getting to know the friendly professors and classmates has been the highlight of my time at QMUL. I hope that we can collaborate or work together in the future.
