The accumulation of wealth provides a challenge for the modern tax system as saving is encouraged but excessive saving and the transmission of wealth between generations create issues of fairness and equality. This module examines the UK system of the taxation of savings including pensions and also the taxation of accumulated wealth. An international perspective is given by examining the systems adopted by other countries such as France, Ireland and the USA. The module also looks at tax havens and their rationale and also the various attempts to regulate them. A further policy perspective is given by issues of privacy and equality.
